PLAB 2 Essentials

What is PLAB 2?

PLAB 2 is a practical exam that is also referred to as an objective structured clinical exam (OSCE). You'll have to go through 16 stations, each lasting eight minutes with a 90-second "break" in between. The entire exam lasts 3 hours and 10 minutes.

Where and when can you take PLAB 2?

PLAB 2 has dates multiple times a week throughout the year. It is exclusively available in the United Kingdom and is usually held in the GMC building in Manchester.

What is the price?

£875

What is the PLAB 2 pass rate?

PLAB 2 is passed by roughly two-thirds of candidates.

PLAB 2 at the junior level covers common UK circumstances.

PLAB 2 is a practical exam, as previously stated. It will evaluate your medical knowledge, clinical skills, and, most crucially, your communication abilities. The exam, like PLAB 1, covers the usual or essential clinical scenarios that a UK junior doctor at FY2 level would be required to manage.

So, what exactly is an FY2, and what do they do?

A FY2 doctor is one who has recently completed their internship (FY1). FY2s work in medical and surgical wards, in A&E, and in primary care clinics. Because they do not work in complex GP or specialist clinics, they do not require specialised skills.

FY2s are expected to commence acute condition management, diagnose and manage common illnesses, and avoid missing important life-threatening disorders.

PLAB 2 is Challenging

Despite the fact that PLAB is only set at the level of a doctor who has completed internship, it should not be overlooked. Many IMGs, like myself, find PLAB 2 quite difficult, thus thorough preparation is required to pass.

This is reflected in the pass rate reported on their website, as up to one in every three IMGs fails PLAB 2. This leads me to my next point.

PLAB 2 requires excellent communication abilities.

During the PLAB 2 exam, IMGs frequently struggle with verbal communication in English. Many IMGs revert to memorising scripts and repeating stock words, which are frequently taught at PLAB 2 academies, but these sound unnatural, disingenuous, and sometimes the responses do not reflect what the patient has actually spoken. Examiners may detect when you are not actually communicating with the patient and will penalise you for it.
